How much does a nursing home cost?

What the resident pays, what long-term care insurance pays, and the help available when income is not enough.

Two parts to the bill

In a nursing home, long-term care insurance covers the help and care. The resident pays the accommodation price: room, meals, laundry.

An example

In one Luxembourg nursing home on 1 January 2024: €2,490 a month in a double room, €2,800 in a single room and €2,850 in a "comfort" single room. The price included the room, three meals and a snack a day, laundry, incontinence supplies and activities. Telephone, television, hairdresser, chiropodist and medicines were billed on top.

According to STATEC, retirement and nursing home rates rose by 2.3% on 1 May 2025. Prices differ between homes: always ask for the price list.

If income is not enough

The Fonds national de solidarité (FNS) can pay a "gerontological care" supplement to people admitted permanently to a home for older people when their resources do not cover the accommodation price. It depends on income, and an amount is kept for personal needs. The home’s social service or the FNS can tell you the current conditions.

How many places?

Luxembourg has 56 nursing homes with 6,981 beds and 15 assisted-living sites with 1,095 places. 31 homes offer short-stay beds (102 in total), useful after a hospital stay or to give a family carer a break.
